Institute of Global Studies A new Institute of Global Studies has been created by the State University of New York and China’s Nanjing University. It is designed to serve as an innovative, collaborative platform for the advance of knowledge in the field of global studies. The establishment of the institute reflects the deepening of the relationship between the two schools as well as the further expansion of ties between SUNY and various high level government, research, and educational organizations in the People’s Republic of China over the last several years. The core mission of the jointly administered, interdisciplinary institute is to study the multiple dimensions of globalization and its consequences for economy, society, business, and public policy. Among the issues to be considered during the initial years will be the impact of globalization on the innovation process, the role of globalization in shaping Sino-US business and technology ties, the changing face of higher education in an era of globalization, and global trends and challenges regarding the management of international issues such as climate change, the environment, and health issues. More specifically, the institute intends to raise the awareness and understanding of the forces of globalization across business and academia and will disseminate its findings and results inside and outside the classroom to a broad audience of policymakers, business executives, scholars and students in the US, China and beyond. Four major types of activities will occur at the Institute: Joint Research-bilateral and multilateral teams Joint Outreach-conferences, seminars, and workshops Executive Education and professional training-customized programs tailored to specific student and professional audiences Special programs and initiatives-summer institutes, tutorials, and corporative projects The primary office of the Institute will be located in Nanjing on the site of the new SUNY/Nanjing International College. The US office is housed at the Levin Institute in New York City. The Co-Directors will be Dr. Denis Simon, who current serves as Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Levin and Dr. Zhang Rong, Vice-President of Nanjing University. Nanjing is located in Jiangsu province, which is one of China’s most rapidly growing and economically successful provinces. It is the province with the greatest amount of foreign investment in China, some $120 billion. The Institute is an outgrowth of an emerging relationship between New York State and Jiangsu Province which fosters exchanges on many levels between the peoples and organizations in both the US and China. Both SUNY and NJU agree they will attempt to ensure that the Institute maintains its role as a free and open platform for discussion and the exchange of ideas and concepts being studied. |
