JumpStartNYC for the Arts

New York City’s arts and cultural organizations are the life blood of the city.  To strengthen New York’s arts community, the NYC Economic Development Corporation has elected to open up JumpStart for the Arts – to make available the skills of New York’s financial services professionals to non-profit arts and culture organizations.

JumpStartNYC is a unique and proven program, established in early 2008 as one of Mayor Bloomberg’s initiatives to stimulate the NYC economy.  It pays a double dividend, helping experienced professionals leaving the financial services industry explore new opportunities to use their skills..  And it puts their talents to direct use, in this case to support the arts community through 8-10 week, pro bono consulting projects.  After a one-week educational boot camp, JumpStart consultants will work at least half time on a concrete project of importance to the host organization.

JumpStartNYC’s pilot program this spring focused on NYC’s entrepreneurial sector, and was a great success.  Its consultants created new financial models, developed investment collateral, conducted business development projects, helped CEOs better understand their business processes, and got rave reviews from their hosts.  Many of them continue to work with these firms on paid engagements.  Check out the testimonials from host organizations and consultants.

    Project Ideas:

    • Varied, featuring financial analysis, market development, new media launch, compliance, IT, operations, strategy, business and investment development.
    • How can you best use a financial services professional to strengthen your financial plan and model, support development, explore new opportunities?
    • Clear scope of work to engage a professional for 8-10 weeks half-full time.
    • Challenging but achievable for an experienced professional in that time frame.
    • Learning experience to add to the participants’ resume. Mutual benefit.
    • Think of what you need that you can’t get to, and specify deliverable
    • Match of consultant and project based on mutual interest.

Tejpaul Bhatia, CEO of Media Merx, one of our host companies said it well.  “We found the best project to be formed by finding that place where the interests of the consultant and the company intersected.  This allowed us to explore a new market arena, while at the same time offering our consultant to explore a new skill set that he could bring to future opportunities.”

    JumpStart “bootcamp” – Dec 7-11:

    • Highly-rated, intense transitional program to prepare participants to add value in a different environment.  Mix of faculty and practitioners.
    • Primer on non-profit finances, development, governance, and NYC network.
    • JumpStartNYC will coach and mentor the consultants, and stay in touch with the hosts to make it work.
