Global Workforce Project

The SUNY Global Workforce Project (GWP) has created a method to internationalize curricula to prepare undergraduates for careers in the global economy. The SUNY Levin Institute has developed an on-line Ten Module Globalization Curriculum, and Globalization101 – a rich on-line depository of globalization teaching materials.

The project was funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant to the Levin Institute, in collaboration with SUNY campuses at Brockport and Cortland. The program began in August 2009 and is now entering a 4th year.

The program three main components:

A Ten Module Globalization Curriculum to internationalize undergraduate education, now available at www.suny.edu/globalskills. The curriculum modules cover the following issues: Trade, Sustainability, Human Rights, Gender, Banking and Finance, Technology, National Sovereignty, Health, Demographics, and Service Organizations. Each six-hour module contains lesson plans that help faculty teach the designated international topic through activities that build holistic thinking skills, cross-cultural communications skills and technology acumen.
A Faculty Training Curriculum Workshop to integrate the globalization modules into an array of faculty courses. The workshop includes a guided discussion on creating student-centered learning outcomes to help faculty create and assess activities that build holistic thinking skills, cross-cultural communications skills and technology acumen. An online version of the training course will be available in Spring 2013.
To encourage greater language study, the project piloted a videoconference Chinese language course. This model offers a straightforward way to expand language programs throughout the SUNY system, bringing language opportunities to the system’s 460,000 students.

GWP aims to give students knowledge about international affairs, encourage the development of skills linked with globalization, and stimulate interest in further study, including languages and international experience.
